Cardio Kool Kids™ – Creating Healthy Kids for a Lifetime!

Cardio Kool Kids™  was created by Amy Head in 2003. Amy holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Louisville, Kent School of Social Work and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice in Marietta, Georgia. Amy is also a Certified Group Fitness Instructor through the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and a Licensed Zumba Instructor.

In her clinical work with children and families, Amy was becoming increasingly concerned about the overall physical health and wellness of children.  Computer use, video games and childhood obesity were on the rise. Families were getting busier, and food choices were getting “faster.” All of this was pointing to a generation of children whose hearts, bodies, and self-esteem could be in life-long jeopardy.

The idea for Cardio Kool Kids came to Amy through her clinical work with families as well as through an experience that she had with her five year old daughter. Amy’s daughter was enrolled in an afterschool traditional dance class.  With each passing week, her daughter seemed more and more disinterested in the class.  Upon exploring this, Amy found that her daughter was happy with the teacher and the kids and even some of the dance; but, she was frustrated by the rigid structure of the hour, especially after a full day of kindergarten.  She just wanted to have fun; and this traditional dance class felt like work to her.

Amy began thinking about the emotional and the developmental stages of preschool and school age children and decided that if a dance class could be combined with elements of fitness and fun, then it might appeal more not just to younger children, but also to boys and children who might not normally walk into a dance studio due to issues around their weight, coordination, etc.  All of this coupled with the rising concerns around childhood obesity worked hand in hand with Amy’s clinical and fitness backgrounds to create the idea and the program that is now Cardio Kool Kids.

With enthusiastic support from parents and learning communities, Cardio Kool Kids has served hundreds of children over the years by developing an innovative program where children experience dance, fitness, and wellness in an exciting and fun way!
